Well, I say “new,” but it’s more accurately described as a new combo set of already existing products:

Our friends at Baron Fig make some of the best notebooks and sketchbooks around, one of which was 2015’s “Work/Play” edition. After many requests from their customers and fans, they’ve released the third edition of that hardcover notebook, dubbed “Work/Play III”.

Like the original Work/Play — and its second revision, which somehow slipped under my radar in 2017 — every spread of this limited-edition, 192-page hardcover notebook has a 5mm dot-grid page on the left (great for to-do lists, tracking expenses, etc) and a blank page on the right (for your doodles and freeform note-taking).

Baron Fig’s new “Unfinish” notebook is a limited-edition version of their Confidant designed in collaboration with Khoi Vinh, with an interesting twist:

Each page inside the notebook has an image that is essentially unfinished. […] The idea is that it’s printed in this light blue ink so that you can easily ignore it if you like. If you’re inspired by it you can extend the image with your own doodling, you can trace over it, you can turn it into a whole scene. Every time you turn a page there’s something new to spark your creativity.

Each of its 192 pages has a different incomplete image for you to doodle with. Examples include a headless horse, a floating lighthouse, the top of a suit of armor, a wheel-less car, half an umbrella, a clock with the bottom sliced out, and more. I love this whole concept, along with the lovely blue color of the whole thing.

Our friends at Baron Fig have unveiled a new limited-edition version of their Confidant notebook, dubbed the “Askew” notebook.

Created in collaboration with designer and artist Debbie Millman, every single page and line in this notebook is hand-drawn, but not necessarily in the way you’d expect. In their own words:

Every line is hand drawn, and while some cooperate—others are downright unruly. This limited edition is designed to inspire thinkers to bend the rules and follow even their most meandering ideas.

Each page offers a new surprise that may get you thinking differently about what you choose to jot down there. Additionally, the “blue pen blue” cover of the Askew notebook makes a nice contrast with the standard Confidant’s gray cover.

Regular readers of Tools & Toys will know that we love the notebooks and other products made by the guys at Baron Fig, particularly their Confidant hardcover notebooks.

It slips snugly onto the notebook, protecting it all around and adding pockets on the front and back for storing notes and such. Our friends at Baron Fig and the nice folks over at Product Hunt have teamed up to produce a limited-edition Confidant notebook. Inside it’s the same dot-grid Confidant you know and love, but the outside features a beautiful cappuccino-colored cover, which sports the Product Hunt logo. The ribbon bookmark is also a lovely shade of green rather than the original Confidant’s signature yellow.
