Energizer “Recharge Universal” Rechargeable AA Batteries (NiMH)
Despite the extra upkeep and the fact that they cost a heckuva lot versus picking up cheap disposable batteries from the dollar store, we really do recommend making the switch to rechargeable batteries.
They’ll actually save you money in the long run, since you won’t be picking up new packs of batteries every time the old ones die. And, as long as you intend to squeeze the maximum possible life out of the things before recycling them, they’re generally better for the planet.
Energizer’s “Recharge Universal” AAs are rated for 2,000mAh*, can be charged up to 1,000 times each (with a 12-month shelf life when unused), and they’re made from 4% recycled batteries. As a nice touch, they also come pre-charged out of the package.
* In Wirecutter’s testing, these batteries actually had an average capacity of 1,896mAh — still enough to power an RC car for 16 hours straight, which is nuts.
Get a pack of 8 batteries for $23 on Amazon. If you don’t need that many, a pack of 4 is $11. They also offer AAA batteries in packs of 8 for $20.
Whatever you choose, don’t forget to get a smart battery charger while you’re at it. 🔋
