Queen Majesty Scotch Bonnet & Ginger Hot Sauce

We’ve all seen those kitschy hot sauces sold in gift shops that have, like, insane-looking donkeys or atomic bombs or poor-taste references to fiery nether-regions on their bottles. And maybe they don’t even taste bad or anything, but you can’t exactly be sharing something like that with grandma or friends who bring their kids over to the backyard cookout.

What you want is a hot sauce with more refinement, and that’s exactly what the Queen Majesty people do. Their bottles are classy, their flavor combos are interesting, and the sauces are handmade in small batches to the highest standards using fresh, whole ingredients.

My starting recommendation would be the Scotch Bonnet & Ginger hot sauce, which a lot of people first discovered during season 4 of Hot Ones. Host Sean Evans has stated that it’s one of his favorite hot sauces of all time, and if that’s not enough of an endorsement, I don’t know what is.

This sauce has a rather unusual flavor, in a good way. It’s very ginger-forward (kind of curry-esque, I find) and has this bright, citrusy sweetness — but then you get this zip of spice that comes from the Scotch bonnet and habanero peppers. Not so overwhelmingly spicy that people with low tolerance can’t take it, but it’ll definitely leave a tingle that keeps you coming back again and again.

You’ll want to put it on EVERYTHING — chicken, pork, shrimp, eggs, green veggies…the list is endless. It makes every food taste a bit more exotic and zesty.

The only downside is that a mere 5 oz bottle will run you $13 on Amazon. You’ll go through that amount quickly and feel disappointed you don’t have a backup gallon of it in the fridge, so consider yourself warned.
