You already know and love Fellow’s “Stagg” gooseneck kettles for making pour-over coffee, but did you know they also make a wide-spout kettle for all sorts of other uses where laser-precise pouring and temperature control aren’t the top priority?

Released a couple months ago as an update to their stovetop edition from 2019 ($105) — which you can read about the design of on the company’s blog — the all-electric “Clyde” kettle is more of a workhorse that’s perfect for making tea, hot cocoa, press coffee, ramen, instant oatmeal, and more.

The “Smoke Green” colorway pictured on the right is only available from Fellow's website and at Crate and Barrel.

It has that signature sleek matte look, sculptural shape, and highly considered build that helped put Fellow’s products on the map back when they hit the scene. It can hold a hefty 1.5 liters of water, which it brings to a boil with a simple flip of its on/off switch:

Fellow “Tally” Digital Pour-Over Coffee Scale http://toolsandtoys.net/fellow-tally-digital-pour-over-coffee-scale/ http://toolsandtoys.net/fellow-tally-digital-pour-over-coffee-scale/#comments Sat, 20 Apr 2024 00:40:30 +0000 http://toolsandtoys.net/?p=47456 The ultimate coffee scale for pour-over fanatics.]]>

Look, I need to clear something up about the Fellow product I’m about to share. While its model name is technically “Tally” alone, this was the first thing I thought of when I saw “Fellow Tally Pro” in the listing title:

So yeah — having a totally normal brain over here 🫠

Anyway, the Fellow Tally is designed to be the ultimate coffee scale for pour-over fanatics. It measures super quickly and is accurate to 0.1 grams, but that’s sort of the baseline for any scale these days.

The real selling points are its premium construction with metal and glass components, the pleasingly intuitive controls, the bright and easy-to-read OLED display, and its three different brewing modes: Brew Assist, Timer, and Weight.

fellow-tally-digital-pour-over-coffee-scale-beans

That “Brew Assist” mode is the smartest of the bunch. It lets you select your desired coffee-to-water ratio — for example, 1:16 — after which you weigh out your coffee beans (displayed on the left), set up your brewer of choice, and then pour water until the water weight in the middle matches the target weight on the right.

Whether you’re the type who tries to eyeball the ratios or you’ve kept a calculation cheat sheet near your brewing station all this time, I’m sure you can appreciate how helpful this feature is for pouring the perfectly portioned brew every time.

Fellow Introduces the “Gen 2” Ode Brew Coffee Grinder http://toolsandtoys.net/fellow-introduces-the-gen-2-ode-brew-coffee-grinder/ http://toolsandtoys.net/fellow-introduces-the-gen-2-ode-brew-coffee-grinder/#comments Sun, 13 Nov 2022 23:35:50 +0000 http://toolsandtoys.net/?p=45491 The upgrade you've been waiting for, now with finer and more precise grinding, anti-static technology for less mess, and more.]]>

When we last checked in with Fellow Products’ Ode Brew Grinder, they were still gearing up for its initial launch into the world. It’s been a couple years since, and it’s been doing quite well for itself — that is, barring some reviewers’ dislike for how messy it could be, along with an issue in the hopper design that sometimes prevented a continuous feed of beans into the machine.

fellow-ode-brew-gen-2-coffee-grinder-2

Fellow has taken these criticisms to heart, and they’ve introduced a second-generation model that brings several new features to the tabl– er, countertop:

  1. All-new burrs — After months of repeated design work and prototyping (and a lot of frustration along the way), Fellow’s R&D VP Nick Terzulli developed a completely original burr design that allows the Ode to grind finer and more precisely than before, although still not into the espresso range. The difference this has made in coffee extraction versus the Gen 1 is astounding.
  2. Less mess — With the Gen 2 they’ve introduced anti-static technology to reduce retention and grind mess, thereby keeping your coffee station nice and clean.
  3. Larger, redesigned hopper — The capacity of the coffee bean hopper has been expanded from 80g to 100g, so you can run larger batches at once. It also now has steeper angles to feed beans faster and more smoothly down the chute.
  4. Larger, redesigned catch cup — Likewise, the catch cup has been expanded to hold 100g of coffee grounds, and it now pours those grounds more easily than the first model allowed.

With all of these awesome upgrades comes a higher price point, understandably. The Gen 2 Ode is $345 on Amazon (versus the original’s $299) and still comes in your choice of matte black or matte white.

Fellow’s Stagg EKG Kettle is About to Get a Big Upgrade (Two, Actually) http://toolsandtoys.net/fellow-stagg-ekg-pro-and-pro-studio-edition-kettles-pre-order/ http://toolsandtoys.net/fellow-stagg-ekg-pro-and-pro-studio-edition-kettles-pre-order/#comments Sat, 08 Oct 2022 22:40:44 +0000 http://toolsandtoys.net/?p=45360 They're taking the best kettle and making it even better. (Releases October 14th, 2022)]]>

We’ve written many times about Fellow’s Stagg EKG electric gooseneck kettle — you know, the one you see all the fancy coffee shops using for pour-overs — and we still think it’s one of the best things to have in your home coffee setup. And now, the Stagg kettle is about to get even better with the release of two new models: the Stagg EKG Pro and the Pro Studio Edition.

Both of these upgraded models bring everything you love about the original EKG and add a bunch of neat new features to totally customize your brew experience, such as:

  • A scheduling option that orders the kettle to reach a preset temperature at a specific time so it’s ready to go when you are. (Those few extra minutes of sleep in the morning can make allllll the difference 😉)
  • An altitude adjustment setting so the kettle doesn’t boil over just because you live in the mountains or wherever.
  • An optional Guide Mode with various preset temperature settings for different coffee brewing styles and types of tea.
  • A chime that alerts you when your water’s ready to pour.
  • Firmware updates over Wi-Fi, which is done via the Fellow app. (I’m not sure if that will be the same as the Stagg EKG+ app or an as-yet-unreleased one.)
  • A high-resolution full-color LCD display on the base for controlling all these things and more, whereas the original had only a black-and-white screen. It looks so great too.

fellow-stagg-ekg-pro-and-pro-studio-edition-kettles-white

The difference between the Pro and the Pro Studio is that the latter brings some premium materials to its construction, including an aluminum base with a reflective glass top, a zinc frame, and a metal cap on the end of the handle. If ever there was a kitchen countertop statement piece, the Pro Studio kettle is it.

The Stagg EKG Pro (from $195) and Pro Studio (from $225) are set to start shipping on October 14th, 2022. You can pre-order either one from Fellow’s site today.

The Stagg EKG variable-temp kettle by popular coffee accessory company Fellow remains one of our favorite pour-over kettles, in both its matte black and bright white variants.

And now a beautiful new colorway is here to play — I’m talking about the “Great Fellow” edition kettle, which they’ve created in collaboration with kitchenware company Great Jones. This limited-edition version of the EKG comes in “Broccoli [Green] with a pop of Mustard” and I’m betting it’s going to sell out fast because it looks awesome:

Fellow “Clara” French Press Coffee Maker http://toolsandtoys.net/fellow-clara-french-press-coffee-maker/ http://toolsandtoys.net/fellow-clara-french-press-coffee-maker/#comments Fri, 11 Jun 2021 20:35:15 +0000 http://toolsandtoys.net/?p=43415 With nuanced details and upgraded features, this brewing process is easy, enjoyable, and the epitome of a coffee table centerpiece.]]>

Before we get started, let me just say it: I know this is an expensive French press. I’m aware you can get a decent one for like 25 bucks and be perfectly happy. I get all of that.

But man, if the Fellow Clara ain’t the prettiest danged French press I’ve ever seen…

French press or coffee table centerpiece? You decide.

French press or coffee table centerpiece? You decide.

And more than that, they put all their usual thoughtful design thinking into getting every little detail right. Any pain point you’ve ever had with a French press, they tackled it head-on:

  • Don’t own a scale? That’s okay, because the Clara has fill/ratio lines for both coffee grounds and hot water, so your brew comes out great every time.
  • Sick of having to line up a small strainer ‘zone’ with the pour spout? Those days are over, because this press has an all-directional pour lid.
  • Feel like your French press never makes enough coffee? Fellow’s beautiful creation holds up to 24 ounces per batch, which should be enough for you and a companion to have at least a cup each — maybe two with a lighter pour.
  • Does your coffee cool down too quickly? Well not only is the body of the Clara double-walled and vacuum-sealed, the pour spout is too:

It was extremely difficult to make a vacuum-sealed body and spout; it took six months to get it right. The biggest issue we faced during the prototyping phase was lining up the spout and body properly while maintaining the welding and seal. The team wanted to maintain high-quality aesthetics while keeping Clara up to snuff, quality-wise. This was exceptionally hard to do, but we eventually got there.

  • Hate cleanup? They added a nonstick coating to the interior that makes it easy to get out all the grinds and gunk after brewing. To protect that coating, they include a wooden agitation stick so you can stir the grounds without scratching the inside of the brewer.

Fellow is indisputably the king of coffee paraphernalia these days. There’s a reason so many high-end cafes use (and sell) their kettle, their storage canisters, and more.

Their Junior Demitasse mugs boast the same level of sleekness and quality as the rest of the lineup, and are the perfect size for sipping a double-shot of espresso.

Crafted from thick double-walled ceramic with a stunning copper base, these cups retain heat inside while keeping your hands safe from burning (unless you splash coffee over the top, of course). It also keeps condensation from being a problem.

The tapered shape gives the mugs a certain visual appeal, so even when you’re not using them, you’ll almost feel tempted to leave them out on display.

You can get a set of two 2.3 oz cups in matte white or matte black for $35 on Amazon.

Pre-order the Fellow “Ode Brew” Coffee Grinder http://toolsandtoys.net/pre-order-the-fellow-ode-brew-coffee-grinder/ http://toolsandtoys.net/pre-order-the-fellow-ode-brew-coffee-grinder/#comments Thu, 24 Sep 2020 21:40:10 +0000 http://toolsandtoys.net/?p=41740 A powerful and precise home brew grinder with café capabilities. (Ships November 2020)]]>

After their enormously successful Kickstarter project earlier this year — over $1.2 million??? holy cow — the team at Fellow is gearing up to release their upcoming “Ode Brew” coffee grinder into the world.

Rather than trying to please both brewed coffee drinkers and espresso fans (a feat rarely managed by any grinder manufacturer), Fellow have poured all their engineering prowess into creating a powerful grinder to dominate the home brew market only — that means pour-over, French press, cold brew…you get the idea.

Another intentional choice they’ve made is to use a shallow (80-gram capacity) loading bin rather than a tall hopper. This not only saves vertical space, it’s specifically designed for single-dosing your brews so as to maximize the beans’ freshness.

fellow-ode-brew-coffee-grinder-loading-bin

It couldn’t be easier to make grind adjustments with the Ode. On the front is a single giant knob with 31 grind settings — there’s seriously no way you can miss the thing unless your name is Mr. Magoo — that controls generously sized (64mm) professional-grade flat burrs.

fellow-ode-brew-coffee-grinder-control-knob

Those burrs are powered by a direct-drive motor with PID feedback control to expose every bean to the same force and speed to improve grind quality and produce even particle distribution.

It’s kind of unbelievable they were able to pack this much design consideration into such a beautiful and compact package, and for only $299.

Pre-order now and bring café performance to your countertop this fall when the Ode starts shipping in November 2020.

Fellow “Carter” Vacuum-Insulated Travel Mug http://toolsandtoys.net/fellow-carter-vacuum-insulated-travel-mug/ http://toolsandtoys.net/fellow-carter-vacuum-insulated-travel-mug/#comments Wed, 30 Oct 2019 17:15:31 +0000 http://toolsandtoys.net/?p=39409 An uncompromising travel mug finally worthy of the coffee inside.]]>

We’ve covered a number of vacuum-insulated travel mugs over the years, and each one is darn useful in its own way. However, we’ll be the first to admit that none of them quite capture the simple pleasure of drinking from your favorite mug at home. They’re focused more on heat retention than, say, pleasant hand-feel or coffee aromatics.

Fellow’s new “Carter” everywhere mug answers the question, “Why can’t I have it both ways?”

The Carter features a matte textured exterior that feels great in the hand, plus an aromatic wide mouth so drinking your coffee becomes the multi-sensory experience it was meant to be. But they didn’t stop there — it’s also coated with ceramic on the inside to make sure your coffee tastes as good on the road as it does at home.

fellow-carter-vacuum-insulated-travel-mug-lifestyle

Notice how that stainless steel lip poking out of the top there has a bit of a taper to it? It’s such a simple thing but makes all the difference in how comfortable the Carter is to drink out of, as opposed to a lot of travel mugs with their almost sharp sipping edges.

Not to mention, you won’t be surprise-tongue-burned by still-hot coffee coming out of a tiny drinking hole — it takes out all the guesswork.

fellow-carter-vacuum-insulated-travel-mug-pour-over-compatibility

The wide mouth isn’t just for aromatics either. At 69mm in diameter, it’s designed to fit the most popular manual brewing devices, like the AeroPress and Hario V60. You just brew and go, it’s that simple.

Even after focusing on all these other little features, they still made sure to include a double-walled vacuum seal that keeps drinks hot for 12 hours or cold for 24. And, the lid sports a leak-proof seal to ensure your day bag won’t get wet while you’re on the go.

The Carter comes in two sizes across three colors:

Atmos has an integrated vacuum pump in the lid which removes oxygen to keep your coffee from going stale.]]>

If the Ankomn Turn-N-Seal container were a tad more stylish looking, the Fellow Atmos Vacuum Canister might be the result.

The basic premise is very similar: Using a hidden pump within the lid — activated by twisting back and forth — you create a vacuum inside the canister, protecting the coffee within (or tea, or food) from oxidizing and thus keeping it fresher for longer.

Once the airtight seal’s created, simply press the button in the middle of the lid to release it and bring the pressure back to normal.

There’s not much else to say, though I do recommend reading their FAQ page for details on care and use, along with their Q&A with the Atmos’ inventor (who developed the prototype back in 2014 as a junior student at Stanford!).

The Atmos canister comes in two colors, each in a variety of sizes:

The folks at Fellow — makers of the Stagg EKG kettle — have an interesting product called Prismo that attaches to your AeroPress coffee maker (in place of the existing cap) and produces an espresso-like shot. No, it’s not actually espresso, but it’s pretty dang close and you don’t have to buy a whole separate machine.

It’s comprised of two main features: a pressure-actuated valve and a reusable fine-mesh stainless steel filter. The airtight valve doesn’t drip unless you put pressure on it, solving the “slow drip” problem inherent to the AeroPress. Two things to keep in mind:

  1. It does take more pressure to pull a shot from Prismo than you’d apply for a typical AeroPress brew, so expect a bit of an arm workout.
  2. Don’t use it on a thin/fragile glass vessel.
If you've brewed with an AeroPress before, you'll feel right at home using Prismo.

If you’ve brewed with an AeroPress before, you’ll feel right at home using Prismo.

The resulting shot is full-bodied and has a long-lasting “crema”, with a thickness and consistency comparable to traditional espresso. You can even do a bit of latte art with it. If you think tomorrow will call for some cold brew, it can do that too.

This guy did a nice little YouTube review:

As much as we still love the Bonavita variable-temp kettle around these parts, one thing it’ll never be lauded for is chic style. The Stagg EKG, on the other hand, offers similar temperature control in a far sleeker package. It’s an attention-grabber for sure, sporting the same minimalist matte black look and ergonomically counterbalanced handle as its older sibling, the original Stagg.

The EKG’s base has a temperature control knob that lets you heat water anywhere between 135°F (57°C) and 212°F (100°C), with an option to hold that temperature for an hour. After heating, the base’s built-in stopwatch can help you time your brewing process. Compared to the Bonavita’s 1,000-watt heating element, the EKG’s 1,200-watt one heats all the faster.

One tradeoff with the EKG is that it has no temperature presets like the Bonavita, but that isn’t too big a deal, especially for finicky brewers like myself.

Following a massively successful Kickstarter back in February, the folks at Fellow — who made the original Stagg pour-over kettle and the Duo Coffee Steeper — are accepting pre-orders for the Stagg EKG electric kettle. (US-only as of this writing.)

In addition to sporting the original Stagg’s minimalist look and ergonomically counterbalanced handle, the Stagg EKG appears to be taking aim at our favorite gooseneck kettle around here, the Bonavita variable-temp. The EKG’s base has a temperature control knob that lets you heat water anywhere between 135°F (57°C) and 212°F (100°C), with an option to hold that temperature for an hour. After heating, the base’s built-in stopwatch can help you time your brewing process.

The Stagg EKG is expected to ship sometime this month (November 2017) and can be pre-ordered for $149.

They also offer an EGK+ version ($199) that offers a few additional features, including Bluetooth connectivity to Acaia’s free Brewbar app for iPad. It will ship in January 2018.

The folks at Fellow Products — makers of the Duo coffee steeper, which I wrote about back when it was a Kickstarter project — recently unveiled their upcoming Stagg pour-over kettle. This gooseneck-like kettle not only aims to provide a perfectly steady pour, but also includes two other distinct features:

  1. A built-in thermometer, which in red displays an optimal brew temperature range from 195°F to 205°F.
  2. A weighted, counterbalanced handle that shifts the center of mass closer to your hand for an even easier pour.

The kettle will begin shipping in mid-November 2015. As I write this, there are 203 left of the polished steel model (compatible with gas, electric, and induction burners) and 64 left of the matte black model (not compatible with induction, but does work with gas and electric).
