ESR Qi2 MagSafe 15W Car Mount Charger http://toolsandtoys.net/esr-qi2-magsafe-15w-car-mount-charger/ http://toolsandtoys.net/esr-qi2-magsafe-15w-car-mount-charger/#comments Wed, 24 Jan 2024 20:05:49 +0000 http://toolsandtoys.net/?p=47076 The future of magnetic wireless charging is here, and it's ready for your car.]]>

The future of magnetic wireless charging is the Qi2 spec, and you can expect a wide swath of compatible chargers, smartphones, adapter cases, and more to hit the market over the next year or two.

Accessory company ESR [previously] has gotten on the ground floor early with their new car mount charger, bringing with it the benefits that all Qi2 (“chee two”) devices should share: faster charging speeds — 15 watts instead of merely 5 watts —that also happen to be more safe and efficient, thanks to the use of magnets that always align the charging coils perfectly and thus prevent energy loss in the form of battery-damaging heat.

esr-qi2-magsafe-15w-car-mount-charger-dash-air-vent

Like most car mounts/chargers, this one comes with the option to be adhered to your dash or clipped onto an air vent. Either way, you’ll be able to switch your phone between portrait and landscape orientations anytime you like, where it will reliably stay put thanks to strong magnets that can theoretically hold up to 48 lbs of weight.

Yeah, I know, it’s a little weird to write about an accessory for iPhone models that are about to become old news in just a few days, but the ProGrip kit from ShiftCam is definitely worth your attention if you’re planning to hold onto any size iPhone 13 (or 12 or 11) and photography/videography is a big part of what you use that device for.

shiftcam-progrip-iphone-camera-grip-wireless-power-bank-lifestyle

With a design inspired by DSLR cameras, the ProGrip adds a comfortable and ergonomic photo-shooting grip to your iPhone, complete with a wireless shutter button that seamlessly pairs with your camera app and allows you to take photos with your index finger, just like the real thing.

The grip and shutter button alone are cool enough, but then you discover that the device also acts as a 6,400-mAh wireless (Qi) power bank that keeps your iPhone topped up through longer shooting sessions. You can even hook up a second small device via USB-C and charge it up as well.

Kensington “StudioCaddy” Apple Device Charging Station and Organizer http://toolsandtoys.net/kensington-studiocaddy/ http://toolsandtoys.net/kensington-studiocaddy/#comments Tue, 20 Jul 2021 14:30:57 +0000 http://toolsandtoys.net/?p=43661 Maximize desktop space while keeping your Apple devices charged, organized, and within reach.]]>

A couple weeks ago, Kensington released their new StudioCaddy charger + organizer system, designed specifically for Apple devices. This two-piece set includes…

  1. A stand that vertically cradles a closed MacBook along with an iPad in portrait or landscape orientation.
  2. A dual Qi charger where you can rest and recharge your iPhone and AirPods.

kensington-studiocaddy-2

The Qi charger magnetically attaches to the MacBook/iPad stand, or you can keep them on separate sides of your desk — whichever suits you better. It also has a 12W USB-A port and a 20W USB-C port in case you need more charging options (albeit a bit on the slow side).

I like that the iPad and iPhone slots keep those respective devices angled toward you so they’re still fully usable while docked. Not to mention how nice and neat this whole system makes your workspace look.

ZENS “Liberty” 16-Coil Dual Wireless Charging Pad http://toolsandtoys.net/zens-liberty-wireless-charging-pad/ http://toolsandtoys.net/zens-liberty-wireless-charging-pad/#comments Tue, 10 Nov 2020 23:20:23 +0000 http://toolsandtoys.net/?p=42025 16 overlapping coils gives you freedom of wireless charging placement for up to two devices.]]>

Unlike the Nomad Base Station I wrote about previously, the ZENS “Liberty” wireless charging pad doesn’t just use a separate charging coil for each device; it has sixteen overlapping ones that create a full-spread charging zone that simply works no matter where you set a device down.

Pictured here is the glass edition, partly for illustrative purposes but also because it looks frickin' sweet.

Pictured here is the glass edition, partly for illustrative purposes but also because it looks frickin’ sweet.

Basically, this means no more hunting down any “sweet spots” when you want to charge. However, the tradeoff is that you can only charge two devices at once, not three. They do charge at a rate of 15W though, which is pretty nice.

(Important note: I’ve heard reports that this charger doesn’t play nicely with the Qi charging spec of the new iPhone 12 lineup. I only have the 11 myself, so I can’t test this for certain.)

The fabric-topped edition is $170 on Amazon, while the see-through glass one is $200.

TwelveSouth is well known for occasionally disguising their products as other things. Their “BookBook” device cases, which look like distinguished antique books, are the best example.

However, they have another item with functionality you might not expect: the “PowerPic” picture frame, which doubles as a wireless phone charger.

The New Zealand pine frame holds any 5″ x 7″ photo and looks totally natural on your desk, bedside table, or fireplace mantle, unlike many chargers that stick out like sore thumbs. But it’s just as handy as the rest when you need it — just set your Qi-enabled phone against the photo and it immediately starts getting 10 watts of juice.

I love that the very concept of this device opens up the chance to get clever with your photo + wallpaper combo:

Note: The charging does work through most phone cases up to 3mm thick. If you have a larger phone though, like the iPhone XS Max, you may find that it won’t fit into the frame with any case on. YMMV.

Andobil Auto-Clamping Phone Car Mount & Wireless Charger http://toolsandtoys.net/andobil-auto-clamping-phone-car-mount-and-wireless-charger/ http://toolsandtoys.net/andobil-auto-clamping-phone-car-mount-and-wireless-charger/#comments Tue, 02 Jun 2020 19:05:10 +0000 http://toolsandtoys.net/?p=41038 Simply place your phone in the mount and it automatically clamps around it in a secure grip, then begins charging it wirelessly with the Qi pad on the back.]]>

Andobil’s wireless car charger kit is a lot like the iOttie “Auto Sense” mount I wrote about a while back, with the minor exception that it doesn’t have a sensor that opens the arms whenever your phone approaches — they simply stay open until your phone is put back on, and then they automatically close around the phone in a secure grip. Oh, and it costs $10 less.

Barring those differences, the functionality between the two is really quite similar. The back of the Andobil mount acts as a 7.5W Qi wireless charger for supported iPhone models (or 10W for Android phones), which works even if you’re using a case up to 6mm thick. The foot underneath the mount can be adjusted up or down so that the pad better aligns with your particular phone’s charging area.

You can either mount it on your dash or clip it onto an air vent. You can also try adhering it to your windshield if you like, but when the summer heat hits, you may find that it falls off. They have a newer model that promises to have better suction on a windshield, and it costs another few bucks less, but it apparently doesn’t include the QC3.0 adapter anymore, so…yeah. Go with your gut either way.

The Andobil auto-clamping mount is $50 on Amazon.

AMAES 26800mAh Solar Qi Power Bank http://toolsandtoys.net/amaes-26800mah-solar-qi-power-bank/ http://toolsandtoys.net/amaes-26800mah-solar-qi-power-bank/#comments Wed, 04 Dec 2019 17:00:49 +0000 http://toolsandtoys.net/?p=39680 Lets your devices wirelessly tap the power of the sun, anywhere you go.]]>

When you’re wandering way off the beaten path, few things offer as much peace of mind as knowing your tech will have enough juice to last until you get back to civilization. AMAES’ solar power bank lets your devices tap the power of {dramatic voice} THE SUUUN.

With a 26800mAh battery capacity, this little fella can fully charge your iPhone half a dozen times (and then some) or an iPad twice. And because it’s Qi-enabled, you can charge those things wirelessly, assuming they’re a new enough model. If you end up in a dark situation on the trail, the battery pack has a bright 18-LED light built in, with four modes to cycle between: flashlight, dim light, SOS mode, and strobe.

It admittedly does take a while for the solar side of things to charge up to that capacity, so what you can do is charge it up with a separate 5V/2A adapter (Type-C or micro-USB) before you leave the house and use the solar side as backup. Either way, it’s a handy thing to have in your kit.

iOttie “Auto Sense” Automatic Clamping Phone Car Mount and Qi Charger http://toolsandtoys.net/iottie-auto-sense-automatic-clamping-phone-car-mount-and-qi-charger/ http://toolsandtoys.net/iottie-auto-sense-automatic-clamping-phone-car-mount-and-qi-charger/#comments Wed, 13 Nov 2019 16:00:51 +0000 http://toolsandtoys.net/?p=39500 Uses a proximity sensor to detect when you're trying to dock your phone, causing the arms to automatically open and close around it. Can you say “truly living in the future”?]]>

Back in caveman times, docking one’s phone in the car was a real hassle that involved using both hands to finagle the thing into those cheap clamps and then — because the thing was some unsturdy abomination that snaked out of a cigarette lighter adapter or whatever — using both hands again to plug in the charge cable. You couldn’t be safely doing any of this while driving, it was so annoying.

Luckily we now live in a civilized age where you can just use iOttie’s “Auto Sense” mount. It’s got a proximity sensor that knows when a phone is headed its way, causing its arms to open and close automatically as you set the device in there one-handed. Seriously, look at it:

Is it too much to say it’s like watching the dock get ready to hug your phone like a friend? Is declaring that “we’re truly living in the future” beating a dead horse? It’s such a simple thing, and yet it’s like…where has this been all my life?

iottie-auto-sense-automatic-clamping-phone-car-mount-and-qi-charger-2

Moreover, once your phone’s securely cradled, the built-in Qi wireless charger pad starts charging any capable smartphone (up to 3.6″), so you don’t have to futz around with a cable every time you put the phone in or take it out. On the latter subject, opening the dock’s arms to get your phone out is as easy as tapping one or both of the release buttons on the side.

They make both a dashboard mount and an air vent + CD slot version to suit pretty much any vehicle/dash setup. Both are $60 on Amazon.

Studio Neat’s Material Dock, Now with Wireless (Qi) Charging http://toolsandtoys.net/studio-neat-materal-dock-wireless-qi/ http://toolsandtoys.net/studio-neat-materal-dock-wireless-qi/#comments Mon, 26 Nov 2018 20:00:03 +0000 http://toolsandtoys.net/?p=36570 One of our favorite iPhone + Apple Watch docking stations now has an option for Qi-certified wireless charging.]]>

A little over two years ago, our friends at Studio Neat released their Material Dock for iPhone and Apple Watch. Today (November 26th, 2018), they announced an updated version that includes Qi charging. The new lineup (minus the iPhone-only dock) looks like this:

studio-neat-materal-dock-wireless-qi-lineup

They’ve also got a nice new video showing off the Qi charging:

One nice thing is that if you already own the old iPhone + Apple Watch dock, you don’t have to buy the whole new version; they’re offering the Qi charging pad (pictured above, lower-right) as a separate option that looks great side-by-side with the dock or on its own elsewhere.

The Material Dock purchasing options are now as follows:

  • Wireless (Qi) + Watch + Lightning dock ($95)
  • Wireless (Qi) pad alone ($50)
  • Regular iPhone + Watch dock ($70)
  • Regular iPhone-only dock ($45)

Nomad’s “Base Station” Wireless Charging Docks http://toolsandtoys.net/nomads-base-station-wireless-charging-docks/ http://toolsandtoys.net/nomads-base-station-wireless-charging-docks/#comments Tue, 20 Nov 2018 17:30:30 +0000 http://toolsandtoys.net/?p=36515 A Qi-enabled hub that provides a central charging station for all your devices.]]>

Let me start off this post by apologizing, because both the products I’m about to mention are either back-ordered or temporarily sold out. However, they’re too cool not to mention, so here I go.

Nomad’s Base Stations are Qi-certified charger hubs that allow you to charge multiple devices at once, with options for both wireless and wired charging. The aircraft-grade aluminum chassis is topped with a soft black leather pad, which is where you’d set any Qi-enabled device (like the iPhone 8 and later) to charge wirelessly, thanks to the three 7.5W charging coils hidden within the frame:

nomads-base-station-wireless-charging-docks-2

The hubs also each have two out ports: one USB-A (7.5W output) and one USB-C PD (18W output). This essentially means that with either pad, you can charge up to two phones wirelessly while charging two other devices via wires, for a total of four.

With the Apple Watch Edition, you also get an integated MFi-certified magnetic charger where you can dock the back of your Apple Watch without taking up room on the leather pad:

nomads-base-station-wireless-charging-docks-3

The standard Base Station Hub ($100) is the one on backorder, with orders placed today (November 20th, 2018) promised to deliver by December 11th. The Apple Watch Edition ($120) is sold out for now, but they do have an email sign-up on the page so you can be notified when it returns.
