Over the past decade, Hong Kong company Wacaco has become well known around the world for their portable espresso makers, like the Minipresso and Nanopresso. About a year ago, they released their smallest model yet: the aptly named Picopresso.

Aimed at pro baristas and advanced-level enthusiasts — people who are already comfortable with shot-pulling technique, dialing in grind settings, tamping correctly, etc— the Picopresso gives you the power to pull an authentic cafe-quality espresso anywhere that will rival any high-end machine, right in the palm of your hand.

Despite its tiny size, it’s capable of reaching 18 bars of pressure, which is way more than enough to pull fantastic, syrupy espresso shots worthy of Instagram (the usual recommendation is ~9 bars).

Like its previous brethren, this pressure is achieved by hand-pumping the piston on the side, which you can do just enough times to pre-infuse the coffee and let it sit a moment before you continue pressing out your shot.

The “naked” portafilter basket measures 52mm across and holds up to 18 grams of coffee grounds, just like a home machine. All you have to do is supply the hot water (perhaps in a thermos, after pre-boiling at home) and the coffee itself, whether you’re grinding it on the spot or doing so before leaving home.

Wacaco “Pipamoka” All-in-One Vacuum-Pressured Portable Coffee Maker http://toolsandtoys.net/wacaco-pipamoka-all-in-one-vacuum-pressured-portable-coffee-maker/ http://toolsandtoys.net/wacaco-pipamoka-all-in-one-vacuum-pressured-portable-coffee-maker/#comments Fri, 21 Feb 2020 19:00:03 +0000 http://toolsandtoys.net/?p=40276 Designed by travelers, the Pipamoka is an entirely self-contained brewing system for making smooth, clean coffee wherever your journey takes you.]]>

Released just last month, Wacaco’s new Pipamoka portable brewer + travel mug joins the ranks of other great travel coffee makers, which includes fellow Wacaco products but with regular brewed coffee in mind this time around rather than espresso.

The Pipamoka is an entirely self-contained brewing system that uses a novel twisting mechanism to create a constant, steady coffee extraction under vacuum pressure, resulting in a very smooth and clean brew.

Watch how it works:

As that video shows, the coffee is filtered through a built-in micro-filter mesh, meaning there’s no paper waste. The filter basket holds 16g of ground coffee, and it’s recommended you use a medium coarse grind that falls somewhere between drip coffee and French press.

Even if you’re not traveling with it, the Pipamoka can be a handy addition to your coffee setup. You can brew with it at home, screw on the lid, then take the mug by itself to work or around town, keeping your coffee hot for hours. The only downside to this setup is that the lid has to be removed to drink the contents of the mug, but I’ve heard that’s something they’re working on for future product releases.

Get the Pipamoka for $50 on Amazon. You might also consider adding the compatible protective case ($20, sold separately).

Nanopresso Portable Espresso Maker http://toolsandtoys.net/nanopresso-portable-espresso-maker/ http://toolsandtoys.net/nanopresso-portable-espresso-maker/#comments Tue, 04 Sep 2018 15:00:44 +0000 http://toolsandtoys.net/?p=35822 With this thing as your travel companion, you can make yourself an excellent cup of espresso just about anywhere.]]>

Way back in early 2015, I wrote about the Minipresso, a handheld espresso maker created by a company called Wacaco. I somehow only recently learned that in April 2017, they introduced the Nanopresso, a smaller, lighter model that’s…

  1. Made with even better materials.
  2. Easier to clean thanks to the more simplified components that can be separated as needed.
  3. Actually manages to hold more coffee and water than its predecessor, despite its smaller stature.
  4. Generates 18 bars of stable pressure (261 PSI) during extraction, and for 15% less force than it takes on the Minipresso.

With this thing as your travel companion, you can make yourself an excellent cup of espresso just about anywhere. You can use it with hot or cold water, and you’ll still get a lovely crema out of it.

Minipresso Handheld Espresso Maker http://toolsandtoys.net/minipresso-handheld-espresso-maker/ http://toolsandtoys.net/minipresso-handheld-espresso-maker/#comments Wed, 07 Jan 2015 15:00:40 +0000 http://toolsandtoys.net/?p=12306 Extract high-quality espresso, wherever you are.]]>

As the title suggests, the Minipresso is a handheld espresso maker for getting your fix on the go. It’s pretty easy to use — add a scoop of ground coffee, tamp it down with the scoop itself, fill the basin with 2.4 fluid ounces of hot water, assemble the whole thing, and continually pump the canister’s side piston to extract espresso straight into the Minipresso’s lid/cup, crema and all. It extracts at 116 PSI, and the espresso in your cup will typically be around ~152°F — not too hot, not too cold.

The Minipresso is expected to ship sometime in early 2015, but can be pre-ordered for $39.
